You may be rooted, but that’s only half the battle. Putting a custom ROM on your phone is where all the magic really happens. There are several ROMs out there and everyone has their favorite, but The Tech Temple recommends going with CyanogenMod. The latest version is Cyanogenmod 7 (CM7) and can be obtained using the steps below:
- Visit the CyanogenMod forum and create a free account (this is to support them and all of their hard work)
- Locate your device from the downloads page. Under the column labeled “type,” you want to look for the most recent “Stable Version” for your particular device. If you have an HTC Hero CDMA (HeroC) click here.
- Download the GApps (Google Apps) here. GApps is a file that is needed for you to sign into your Google Account. Please make sure you get the correct version for your smartphone.
- Download the .zip file and place it, as will as the GApps on the root of your phone’s SD card. When I say root I mean place it onto the main place of your SD card instead of into a folder.
- For the Hero turn off your phone and boot into recovery mode “hold the down volume key and power button simultaneously.”
- Select install zip from sdcard and highlight the name of the zip file.
- Press the trackball in to verify the selection. The back hard key will just take you back one menu so it’s okay to use it.
- Repeat steps 6 and 7 with the GApps .zip file.
- Go back to the man menu and choose reboot (it should be the first option).
After your phone reboots you should see the Cyanogenmod logo. It’ll take ~5 minutes for everything to boot up but once it does you should be prompted to press the android guy and sign into your Google account. If you need any help please feel free to email me.

Hi … When I tried to install from recovery mode after pressing volue down and power button.. I cannot see any file to unzip… is it because my phone is not rooted properly..?
You did your root correctly so don’t worry :-). Are you using clockworkmod or Amon Ra (RA)? Either way, it should say “update .zip.” Where on your SD card did you place the files?
Amon Ra should say “flash zip from SD card.”
Did you select “choose zip file?”
it doesnt say anything about “choose zip file” … (having the same problem as i am doing it now, kinda stuck here -.-)
Download the app “ROM Manager” and once you open it the first option should say “flash clockwork recovery.” Go ahead and flash it, then the “choose zip file” option should be there. I’m guessing you’re already rooted and have super user installed at this point?
How long should it take for the phone to get to the Android Guy?
Do you mean like in the picture? It shouldn’t only take 2-3 minutes the first time you do it. If it says on there for a long time, boot into recovery and choose “wipe data.”
your the bomb bro! thank ypu for all this! thought they forgot about us hero users lol!
No prob! And yeah they did forget about us! Telling us that the Hero can’t run anything past 2.1…lies! What’re you thinking about getting as your next phone, the Hero 4G?
wow there making a hero 4g?? if so then hell yea man im getting that or the evo 3D is cool to
Yeah, I think they’re officially calling it the HTC Kingdom though. And those 3D pictures/video gave me a headache :-
Hey, thanks. You’re doing the right stuff showing how our cell phone can look like after Rooted…
But I am kind of newbie.. will that be much ask you to make a video of how to ROOT HTC Evo 3D REALLY step-by-step tutorial..??
No problem, and thank you for commenting 🙂 I don’t have an Evo 3D myself to show you or else I would definitely post a video, but what I can do is find one that I think is the best (and detailed) that you can go by.
Would you like me to look for an Ice Cream Sanwich rom for you as well? That way you’ll have the latest operating sytem too.
