Fix Your Sprint Visual Voicemail on Your Rooted Device

Image via Wikipedia

The great thing about having a rooted device is that you can take off all of the unwanted apps that come on your phone, but can’t be uninstalled due to the carrier’s restrictions.  However, a great app to put back on your phone is the visual voicemail.  It’s great being able to check your voicemail without having to call and go through tiresome menu confirmations.  Furthermore, the ability to fast forward and rewind just be sliding the progress bar with your finger is fantastic.  One of the few problems with owning a rooted phone is having to find workarounds to problems.  In this case, it’s Sprint’s Visual Voicemail.

There seems to be a few compatibility issues with Cyanogenmod 7 and Sprint’s Visual Vociemail.  I personally ran into this problem after flashing the 7.0.3 update on my HTC Hero, but fortunately I was able to correct the problem.  If you have a Hero and are looking to get your visual voicemail back up and running, follow these steps.

Instructional Video
  1. Download the visual voicemail .apk (this is version 5.1.0.26)
  2. Install the app
  3. Open the app and press the menu button > compose
  4. In the to field type activate@vvm.sprint.com
  5. Press the record button and let it run for at least 5 seconds.
  6. Press send

This should reactivate your Sprint Visual Voicemail.  After you send the message composed messaged you should be good to go and you may receive your previously saved voicemails.

If you have an Evo and you need help getting your voicemail to work, this should help you out.

If all else fails then you can combine your Sprint phone number with Google Voice and check your voicemails by using the Google Voice app.

I tried using 5.1.048 but it wouldn’t work for me either so that’s why I had to use the older version (it was working for me on CM6 as well).  Try uninstalling your current SVVM (use Titanium backup to back it up just in case) and install the 5.1.0.26 version.  I’m curious as to why you haven’t upgraded to CM7?

I am having an issue getting this to work.  I have followed the instructions: download, compose, record and send.  I get “Error V30: Voice message will be delivered when data services are returned.”  Not sure why this happening.  I have unlimited data.  I can go into the browser and go to any website.  I can run Wifi Tether and everything works.  I don’t understand why it say I don’t have data services.  I also choose the phone to stay on the Sprint network as well as roam.  Suggestions?

Ah, sorry about that man.  I thought I had responded to this.  After I got my new phone I was unable to get visual voicemail to work at all, and I tried a few different voicemail .apks.  What phone are you using?

I suggest using Google Voice if you’re okay with doing that.

Congrats on using an ICS ROM! What device are you using by the way?

I would save yourself a headache by using Google Voice instead. It does the same thing as the sprint voicemail but it also transcribes the voicemails into words (the Sprint VVM would charge a fee for that feature) and more. Plus it’s free!

The latest Sprint Visual Voicemails no longer work with this method, unfortunately. Have you thought about using Google Voice?

No problem! Did it work for you? After a while I couldn’t get it to work and had to switch over to Google Voice.

I ended up switching to Google Voice since I couldn’t get the .apk to work after a while. It actually worked out because it has more features.

I get a popup that says “messages will be delivered when data service is available” yet I have full internet access. What do I do now?

Sorry, dumb  question here: Where exactly am I supposed to download the .apk file, and what do I do with it after it’s downloaded?  Do I flash it?  Just try to open it?  What?  I’m not only dealing with the voicemail issue but also with the impairment of GPS functionality and total loss of turn by turn navigation, and the fix for that also requires an .apk download.

      Not a dumb question 🙂

Just put the file anywhere on your sd card/phone. Any file you download from the internet (via your phone) should be in the “downloads” folder. To browse through your phone’s folders, download ES File Explorer.

After you download the .apk file, just find it and tap it like you would a normal app. You should be prompted to install it.

If your GPS is way off, or taking a long time to lock on, I recommend downloading GPS Status.
Here’s my video on how to get it to reset your GPS and download fresh data: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6UuU3E6ivU

      Hope that helps!
