  • Get Xbox Game Pass and Sling TV for $1 (or Free!)

The Polar Vortex has once again made its presence known, bringing negative double-digit temperatures to many parts of the country.  It’s times like these that gaming is at it’s finest.  A time to sit back, relax, turn the volume up and game ’till your heart’s content.  But what if you could immediately add 100+ games to your library and streaming TV for only $1?  With the Xbox Game Pass, this dream has become a reality.

    Xbox Game Pass Deal

Microsoft has been pushing hard lately to gain more subscribers onto it’s Xbox Game Pass.  For $9.99/ month, it’s a pretty good deal.  Benefits of having the Game Pass are:

    • Download and play 100+ titles
    • Play games the same day they’re released
    • list item 2
    • 20% off games you decide to purchase
    • Play on or offline
    • Xbox 360 games included
    • Xbox ‘Play Anywhere’ games included
    • 10% off downloadable content

The normal trial period is normally only 14 days, but a 30-day trial exists if you sign up at the Xbox Game Pass website.  The link should also appear on your Xbox One dashboard.  As a bonus, you’ll also get a 30-day trial of Sling TV.  Sling’s normal trial period of its live TV service is only 7 days, so you’re getting the best of both worlds here.  This is time sensitive, so be sure to sign up by the end of January 30, 2019.

    One Important Requirement

The only caveat to this deal is that this must be the first time you have ever signed up for Xbox Game Pass.  Xbox Live Gold is also required to play online with your friends.

Keep Getting Xbox Game Pass for Free

After experiencing the greatness of Game Pass, you’ll probably want to keep it due to its vast library.  There is a way to avoid having to use ten dollars of your own money every month in order to continue your subscription.  Hopefully you’ve already signed up for Microsoft RewardsThe Tech Temple’s YouTube Channel has a great piece explaining it’s benefits.  To summarize, it gives you free money just for doing what you already do – search the internet.

If you make sure that all of the maximum allotted points are earned every day, you’ll reach the 6,800 point requirement needed to obtain the 1-month pass using your reward points.  At the time of this writing I’ve accumulated 7,050 points this month, so the goal is certainly attainable.  The searches can be done on mobile, your computer or your Xbox One/ Xbox One X.

    Xbox game pass microsoft rewards

Once you accumulate 6,800 points, you’ll be able to purchase the 1-month Xbox Game Pass.

Repeat this process every month and you should be able to play hundreds of games with no expense, except for the time it takes to search (which is no more than 10 minutes each day).  If you’d rather see this process in action, check out the video below.

    Happy gaming!

  • FenSens Smart Wireless Parking Sensor Review: Parking Becomes A Pleasure

Review of the FenSens Wireless Parking Sensor

Navigation, Wi-Fi, backup cameras, blind spot sensors, lane departure detection, remote start…we can’t all afford to have the best vehicle containing the latest technology package. Possessing none of these features can make our current vehicle feel a bit outdated. Thankfully there are affordable gadgets available that can be added little by little, such parking assistants. FenSens, Inc. has been generous enough to let me try out their smart wireless parking sensor appropriately named, FenSens.

    Smart Parking Features

    FenSens-Wireless-License-Plate-Frame

The sensors are located on the bottom left and bottom right of the license plate frame.

Serving as a vehicle guidance system, FenSens aids in estimating how close you are to an object when traveling backwards or forwards. Many of us, myself included, have backed into a parking space only to get out and realize that there was plenty of room to keep going. FenSens’ preeminent feature is that it’s completely wireless. There’s no need to spend hours taking apart your vehicle, running wires, or having to take it to an auto shop for installation. Bluetooth technology is encased within the license plate frame that can be installed on the front or rear of an automobile. This design allows FenSens to be installed onto practically any vehicle, no matter what year it was manufactured in.

    Installing the License Plate Frame

All of the necessary tools required to install the parking sensor are included in the kit which, I must say, is very sharp looking. The AA battery powered parking sensor frame is secured to a vehicle using custom security screws in order to prevent the theft of your $150 parking assistant. I can’t imagine what it would feel like to return to my car only to find that my parking sensor was stolen. Thumbs up to FenSens, Inc. for taking this into consideration.

    FenSens-Installation-Kit

Once the license-plate-based smart wireless parking sensor is installed, the remainder of the action takes place on your iOS or Android enabled device. Install the app, register, pair and get ready to drive. During the onboarding process you will be prompted to enter the distance between the end of your bumper and the license plate frame. Do not ignore this step! Doing so will cause the app to read distances incorrectly. A.K.A. you must really want to run into something with your car. Radial distance markers will be displayed on the screen after setup, with greed representing further space and red signifying closer.

The app also presents the remaining battery capacity of FenSens. Tests have shown that that the batteries should last for 5 months, using the assumption that the device is activated 5 timers per day. FenSens automatically resides in sleep mode when not engaged so that battery life can be extended as long as possible.

    Parking Wirelessly

FenSens is able to register objects that are within 10 feet in front or behind your vehicle, coupled with a radial range of 4 feet (2 feet per sensor). Now you may be thinking, “It’s going to be a pain in the butt having open the app every time I want to back up.” The company has taken this issue into consideration and has introduced the welcomed solution of including a magnetic smartphone holder and physical QuickLaunch button.

    FenSens-TAP-Button-2

The TAP Button comes encased in a rubber holder with a ring that can be slid over a steering wheel. If that’s too uncomfortable for you, it can be removed from the holder and mounted anywhere inside of your vehicle using the included pad equipped with double-sided 3M tape. As soon as the button is pressed the app will display an outline of your automobile along with a visual display of what the sensors are reading.

“F” or “R” can be pressed to active the sensor corresponding to the direction of intended travel. FenSens also keeps up with today’s assistants, enabling the app to be opened on Android by saying “Open FenSens” and “Hey Siri, Launch FenSens” on iOS.
As you backup (or drive forward) the app will beep in slow intervals, followed by quicker ones as an object gets closer and closer to FenSens. Once your vehicle is within the red zone the series of beeps turns into a constant sound to signal extremely close proximity to an object.

    Results During Testing

FenSens has worked relatively well for me since its installation a few weeks ago. However, no gadget is without its flaws. Below are few tips and issues I have come across thus far upon using the smart device.

    TAP Button

The battery encased within the TAP Button was depleted in the unit I received. Replacing it may solve your issue if you’re unable to get the app to recognize it. The battery is a CR 2032. I picked up a replacement from Walgreens and everything worked as it should after that.
The diameter of the TAP Button holder seems small compared to the thickness of today’s steering wheels. I was afraid that the holder would break if I stretched it to the width of my steering wheel, so I opted to go with the included 3M tape. Having it on my steering wheel would have probably felt uncomfortable anyway while making turns.

    The App

There was an initial issue with the FenSens app that prevented me from being able to register a new account; The app cannot be used without it. Thankfully their support team was pretty responsive and I was able to sign up the following day.

The app crashed on my LG v30 more frequently than any app I use on a daily basis. This seemed to especially occur upon entering my vehicle to start the app after it had been asleep for a few hours. After uninstalling and reinstalling the application, the crashes have completely stopped. I also recommend using an automation app, MacoDroid for instance, to start FenSens whenever your device connects to your vehicle’s Bluetooth signal. If your car isn’t equipped with Bluetooth, pick up a Bluetooth receiver. It connects to the AUX port and, viola! Your car now has Bluetooth.

    The Wireless Sensor

FenSens sleeps a little too well. After sleeping for a few hours, the sensor does not want to immediately wake up after opening the app. The app will launch without a problem but no readings will show on the screen. Holding the TAP Button for 3 seconds as the instructions suggest has not worked either. Closing the app and reopening it again seems to be a workaround for this issue.

The wireless sensor comes with the ability to secure it to your vehicle using 4 custom security screws. If your vehicle only has two predrilled holes for screws, you should be just fine. FenSens is still sturdy after driving it a few hundred miles while being held by only 2 screws.

After your car has been sitting outside for a while in the rain or snow, the precipitation may stick to the two round sensors on the bottom of the license plate frame and cause the app to display false proximity readings. Using your hand to wipe the sensors off is enough to get them clean again.

Keep the custom security wrench/ screwdriver in your vehicle. It won’t be easy removing the parking sensor without it.

    Caution

Installation will take much longer than 5 minutes if the included security screws are too small for the existing mounting brackets that your license plate screws currently utilize. Unless you want to break off your current mounting brackets (the objects that the screws actually fasten into) so that they fall between the trunk and its lining, you’ll have to remove the lining entirely in order to remove the brackets and replace them with new ones. This caused the installation to be closer to fifty-five minutes for me since I was performing the installation in the cold had no experience removing the lining. If I was to do it again it’d more than likely take only twenty-five minutes. On the bright side, the new mounting brackets give me peace of mind that my FenSens isn’t going anywhere.

    Is It Worth the Money?

    FenSens-Packaging

The price for wired backup sensor systems range from $15 to $100+. That doesn’t even include the $130 installation fee or the time it will take to remove portions of your vehicle, run wires, drill holes and troubleshoot. The opportunity to avoid all of those makes FenSens worth it’s $150 price tag. The smart wireless parking system includes a 30-day money back guarantee, in the event it isn’t to your liking, along with a 1-year warranty and free shipping.  It can be purchased directly from their website with a chance for a coupon if you spin the wheel, or from Amazon.

There is a slight inconvenience of having to get your phone out to use FenSens, but that’s a small price to pay for a technology upgrade. The included magnetic car mount and TAP Button ease this paint point a bit. The entire system has a high-quality feel, the battery life is pretty decent and the fact that it can be installed on any vehicle that is shorter than 30 feet (due to Bluetooth range limitations) makes FenSens hard to pass up. When you finally part ways with your vehicle, FenSens can easily be uninstalled and placed onto another.

If you’re in the market for a parking system, I absolutely recommend FenSens. It’s already shown that it will continue to make improvements to the app and the ease of installation is hard to overlook. In a world that is becoming more and more connected every day, a smart wireless parking system is a welcomed addition.

  • Easy Ways to Use Huge Smartphone Screens One-Handed

    Easy-Ways-to-Use-A-Huge-Smartphone-Screen

These days phone’s displays are getting larger and longer, enabling us to consume a greater amount of content. What’s not getting larger and longer? Our thumbs. You can do all of the scrolling you’d like but many times the action buttons are at the top of the screen, forcing users to reach 5.5 inches or more multiple times a day. Over time this may cause significant stress and cause musculoskeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome. In order to prevent this from occurring and keeping your thumbs fresh, here are some apps to make your thumb feel like it’s using 3.3 inches of screen instead of stretching across 5.5 inches. Your thumb will thank you.

Let Your Thumb Find the Apps

Wave Launcher - Let Your Thumb Find the Apps

If you’ve ever used the edge sense feature on the galaxy series phone and wanted it on your device, then look no further. Wave Launcher gives you the ability to access any of your favorite apps, shortcuts or apps from any screen without having to return to your home screen. The wave can be activated by swiping from the left, right or bottom of your device and is capable of containing up to 12 different apps. Wave Launcher will prevent your thumb from unnecessarily searching through your app drawer and home screen. Oh, and another thing…it’s free!

Update: Wave Launcher was recently taken down. I’m not sure why. My guess is that because it hasn’t been updated in quite some time, with the last version being 2.2.1. Here is a download link to a non-PlayStore apk. Use at your own risk.

    Easier Thumb Navigation

Pie Control - Easier Thumb Navigation

Android has three main navigation buttons: back home and recents. Wouldn’t it be great if these could be accessed from any portion of your screen? Pie Control makes this dream control. After installation you’ll be able to navigate through your device from the sides, bottom and all four corners. In addition to navigation, another two more additional pie levels can be added for quick access to your most used applications, folders, websites and to take notes. The spacing, size and color of the pie can all be configured in the settings to match the theme of your device. It’s a free download and premium features can be unlocked for $3.90.

    Easier Texting for Your Thumb

Gboard – Easier Texting for Your Thumb

Without question, the majority of work that our thumbs do is using the virtual keyboard. Due to the interphalangeal joint (the portion of the thumb that bends closest to the nail) I don’t believe that the vertical motions are as harmful as the horizontal motions needed to reach across the keyboard. Gboard helps alleviate this by offering left-handed and right-handed modes, shortening the distance between the ends of the keyboard. This option is enabled my holding the comma button down and selecting the hand option that comes appears on the right side. Gboard also allows the keyboard height to be adjusted as well as the entire keyboard itself, allowing you to place the keyboard exactly where you want it.  It’s free from Google.

    Give Your Thumb A Break

    Nova Launcher Gestures

Nova Launcher is way deeper than what I’m going to go over here, so the focus here are the gestures and inputs. If you haven’t explored this section of the app then now is the time to become familiar. There are 11 customizable gestures that can be set to anything you’d like. For example: double tap the to open up your list of apps, double tap then swipe up to launch the camera and swiping down brings down the notification shade. Although these actions have to be performed on the home screen they certainly save your thumbs unnecessary taps. The full version of Nova Launcher is needed to access the gestures, but the money is well worth it and everything else the app offers.

Hopefully these apps help you from moving your phone around in order to navigate across the ever-growing screens. If nothing else, they’ll certainly increase your productivity and efficiency when it comes to operating your Android smartphone or tablet. Do you have any app suggestions that fit this mold? Let myself and others know in the comment section below.

  • HTC Perk Points Set to Expire

Have you recently purchased an HTC device such as the 10, Bolt or U? Remember all of those points you received for purchasing it and anything else from HTC? Well, all of those points are set to expire soon. Soon as in May 29, 2017.

If you have not checked out how many points you currently have, head to https://team.htc.com . Points were awarded 14 days after a purchase was made.

If you were hoping to accumulate some more points in order to get to that next level accessory, unfortunately your time is up. There doesn’t appear to be any way to earn points any more, seeing as that the social media point earnings option has disappeared.

    Redeeming Current Points

One silver lining in this is, although the point levels appear to be accessory specific, they are not. Any redeemable dollar amount can be spent towards the device or accessory of your choosing. This works out great so that you’re not tied to get something that you don’t necessarily want.

    HTC Klick Case

Thanks to the redeeming option, I was able to get the HTC Klick for free (minus shipping). I really wanted that thin case with a kickstand.

Redeem your points now. If you can’t decide what you want now, the deadline to spend your redeemed points is July 1, 2017, so redeem them right now at the very least.

The Future of the Perk Program

There has been very little information released regarding the future of HTC’s perk program. All that is known is the program is evolving into something else. Hopefully HTC makes the program more well known. I don’t see many other phone manufacturers giving points to their customers for every purchase they make. Buying a phone alone gave people enough points to receive a pair of earbuds for free.

Whether you want a new phone, headphones, charger, cord or case, spend those points and don’t let them go to waste.

  • Breaking Down the Features of Google Maps

The Google Maps app has had some pretty significant changes over the years, especially in terms of the way things are laid out.  Some things are hidden, somewhat duplicated and there’s a lot of information to look at.  This can be especially troublesome if you’re driving while trying to set up Google Maps.  This video will quickly show you where all of the settings are in Google Maps, along with showcasing how it can automatically provide you with relevant information if the right settings are filled in.

In this video you’ll learn how the Maps app can automatically tell you:

    • How long it will take to drive from home to work, and vice versa
    • Current traffic conditions
    • Nearest, and most popular, gas stations, restaurants and convenience stores
    • The departure and arrival times of the nearest public transportation
