I just read your post and this explains how to root the HTC hero, but when I was trying to follow your instructions. My build number was different that was you were explaining on there. Mine reads 2.31.651.7, what version is that? My phones battery life hasnt been very good, and when I talked to someone at a Sprint store. One of the workers who had the same phone told me he rooted his phone to get it to work better, and when he needs to have sprint fix it he restores it to factory default and it will go back to normal. Is that true?

First off, thanks for commenting ๐Ÿ™‚

As of now, there is now way to root straight from the 2.31.651.7 version that you have. I would just downloading the file at the link I posted in order to revert back to 2.27.651.5. Then you can root from there with no problem. If you need any assistance, feel free to let me know. I'd be more than happy to help!

And what the Sprint rep told you is true. Just like you're going to put 2.27.651.5 on your phone in order to root it (installing it on your phone using HTC Sync) you can use the same process to go back to the factor default.

Instead of doing that though I would just flash the recovery ROM that is made when you first root your phone. It'll look exactly like your phone is it's current state, minus the root access icon in your app drawer.

I need HELP PLEASE! My build number was different from the ones you mentioned but ended in .2 (2.32.651.2) so I continued with the process but when I tried the cmd step it wasn't finding my phone. I checked and re checked the folders were correct and the commands were correct but still nothing. I then tried to go back to the .5 build you mentioned but in the process it said it could not connect to my phone…I really want a SuperHero please and thank you

Everyone, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I thought Blogger was going to notify me of when people left comments but that wasn't so. Everything should be fixed now though and I'll be much more responsive ๐Ÿ™‚

Kenneth, I'm not sure what your e-mail address is so you can e-mail me if you'd like. TheTechTemple@gmail.com

Renee, I'm VERY sorry for taking so long to get back to you. It's not fun being stuck without a phone (hope you weren't) ๐Ÿ™

When you open the command prompt, try typing "adb shell" and then "# su".

And did you make sure that that you put all of the files in C:\android-sdk-windows\tools ? You'll have to create the folder called "android-sdk-windows" and a folder inside of that one called "tools."

Try this link for more help: http://androidforums.com/droid-all-things-root/48679-help-please-not-recognized-internal-external-command.html

Please let me know if you're still stuck.

First off thanks for the info! now running the mod :). but i wanted to ask, if i get a new memory card (32gb comming) can i copy and paste my files from the old to the new and my phone should work the same?

@Jimmyjamx22: Thanks for commenting and I'm glad I could help you out ๐Ÿ™‚

Yup, you can just copy and paste everything from your old SD card to your new one (not cut and paste because you just never know what could happen…plus you'll still have a backup of all of our things). That's what I did with my 8GB when it came a few months ago.

Which ROM did you decide to go with?

i am running the one listed, and added the google apps, and the sprint icons. im very computer literate BA in computer science, and i gotta say phones are a pain in the ass! one thing you should mention, its not \tools, its \platform-tools after it updates. cause thats were abd is located at after sdk updates. thats were i was stuck at for like 2hrs couldnt figure out were it was, and rooted around my files and found it in there.

I agree, phones are a pain! I remember when I first started getting ROMs I was updating my phone aaaaaall the time! I'm finally on a good one though that I don't plan on switching from anytime soon.

And I'll definitely put up your suggestion. Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

@Jimmyjamx22: Yup! Download GPS Status. That app should recalibrate your sensor and it also has a tool that'll give you faster GPS lock.
