If you’ve ever gone into your picture gallery and clicked on a picture, but then your phone ended up showing you a different one…or your gallery has previews of pictures that you know you deleted a while ago…or any other strange problems in your picture gallery, then this is the fix for you.
I’m running stock Android so I’m not sure if this works for phones running HTC sense or Motomessblur. I would assume so since everything should be in same folders, regardless of the carrier’s customization. Follow these steps to get your gallery up and running the way it should:
- Click Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and clear the thumbnail cache
- Use a file explorer, such as Astro File Manager to navigate to the folder /sdcard/DCIM/.thumbnails. Once there, delete everything in that folder.
- Navigate to /sdcard/Android/data/com.cooliris.media/cache. Again, delete everything inside of the folder.
After following the above steps, restart your phone and head to your gallery. The thumbnails should rebuild and any problems you had before should vanquish. Shout out to Shay D. Life for the tip from the Cyanogenmod forum.

I have Galaxy S, and step one isn’t working for me, it goes like this– Settings/Apps and then it just shows my apps there isn’t a manage button. Should I just go to step two?
Sorry about that man, I left a step out. Select the gallery app, then you should be able to clear the cache. Are you running ICS?
My gallery actually isn’t even showing up on my apps. It’s so aggravating. My father updated my phone yesterday, and it started messing up today. I don’t know what program its running but I can describe what it looks like starting up. It says Galaxy S then its a red three dimensional line and purple dots.. XD I bet that didn’t help at all.
Haha not really but we’ll work through it 🙂
Wow, the gallery isn’t showing up at all? O_o What about when you open up your app drawer, is it gone there as well?
In the mean time, while we’re trying to figure this out, download “QuickPic” from the Play Store. It’s a gallery app and it actually loads images faster than the stock gallery. Here’s a link: http://goo.gl/7dEuW
I actually think my phone is running remICS UX
I think I’ll just use that app for now. I’ll message you on Facebook tomorrow. I need to go to sleep. It’s late here! Thanks for now means a lot!
It’s getting late here too, going on 10:30.
Glad I could help for now 🙂 I’ll be looking for your post on my fanpage. Also, don’t forget to enter the contest so I can send you a nice looking case for that Galaxy S of yours. https://thetechtemple.com/casecontest
That app is amazing. I might just use it instead. Until it messes up too XD. And yeah the gallery is in the app drawer thankfully
Glad you like the app! If it’s still in the app drawer then you still have the default gallery app. If you’re on ICS (ice cream sandwich) then when you go into the settings and view the list of apps, you have to scroll side to side to see more columns of apps. There should be one labeled “all.”
